Supporting Every Child to Grow
At Wavendon Gate School, we believe that every child deserves to feel safe, valued and supported so that they can achieve their full potential. We recognise that children may experience different barriers to learning, attendance, emotional wellbeing and engagement, and we are committed to providing the right support at the right time.
What is the Rainbow Room?
The Rainbow Room is a dedicated, nurturing and inclusive space that provides targeted support for pupils who experience barriers to learning, attendance, emotional regulation or engagement. It offers a safe, calm environment where children can develop emotional wellbeing, build positive relationships and regain readiness to learn through individualised support tailored to their needs.
Our aim is to remove barriers, strengthen independence and enable pupils to access learning and thrive within the wider school environment.
How do we support children?
The Rainbow Room provides a flexible approach to support, recognising that every child is unique. Depending on their individual needs, support may include:
- Emotional wellbeing: Helping children to recognise and manage their feelings, develop coping strategies and build resilience.
- Positive relationships: Providing opportunities to develop trust, confidence and positive interactions with others.
- Readiness to learn: Supporting children to regulate their emotions, re-engage with learning and feel confident in the classroom.
- Individualised support: Working with children to identify their needs, build on their strengths and overcome barriers to success.
- Attendance and engagement: Helping children feel connected to school and supported to attend, participate and enjoy their learning.
- Developing independence: Encouraging children to develop the skills and confidence they need to manage challenges and access learning more independently.
Support is tailored to each child and reviewed regularly. The Rainbow Room is not separate from our wider school provision; it works alongside classroom teaching and pastoral support to help children participate successfully in school life.
Working together to support every child
The Rainbow Room is led through the collaborative work of Mrs Kok, our Inclusion and Pastoral Lead, and Mrs Hazell, our Learning Mentor.
Mrs Kok oversees inclusion and pastoral support, working closely with staff, children and families to identify barriers to learning and ensure that children receive appropriate support. Mrs Hazell works directly with children and their families to support their emotional wellbeing, develop positive relationships and build the confidence and strategies they need to manage challenges.
We recognise the importance of working in partnership with parents and carers. By sharing information, listening to families and working together, we can develop a consistent approach that supports each child’s individual needs.
Helping every child to flourish
At Wavendon Gate School, inclusion means more than providing support when difficulties arise. It means understanding each child, recognising their strengths and adapting our approach so that every pupil has the opportunity to succeed.
The Rainbow Room is an important part of this commitment. Through nurturing relationships, early identification of need and targeted support, we help children develop the confidence, resilience and independence to flourish both emotionally and academically.
Every child matters. Every child belongs. Every child deserves the opportunity to grow.
